Jacob's Red Stew

Image
Written by McDonald, T.   |  Date 27th of March 2023        Who is Jacob?  Why is his stew so important? The story comes from the Old Testament Book of Genesis.  Jacob and Esau were brothers, the sons of Isaac and Rebecca.  According to the story in Genesis 25, Esau is so hungry that he trades his birth right for a bowl of stew!  While the beans and lentils fill the stew with textures and nutrition, the flavours come from the seasoning and spices.

Written by  McDonald, T.    |  Date 28th of March 2021 Charoset sometimes called Haroset is a traditional food at Passover and has special meaning on the Seder plate.  The Seder meal tells the story of passover from the book of Exodus.  This particular part of the meal represents the mortar used to make bricks by the Israelites who were enslaved by the Pharaoh of Egypt.  Since i don't drink alcohol, i have used pomegranate juice.  I have used pecan and pine nuts, but you can use any nuts you like for instance walnuts or almonds are fine to us. Ingredients Apple x 1 Apple sauce x 1 tsp Golden syrup x 1 tbsp Pecan nuts x 6 - 8 chopped Pine nuts x a sprinkle Ground almonds x 2 tsp Cinnamon  1/2 tsp Pomegranate juice Method  Chop the apple and nuts then soak them in the pomegranate juice Add all the other ingredients immediately and stir You should end up with a lumpy thick past  Happy passover!

Cain and Abel

Image
Written by McDonald, T.   |  Date 14th of March 2021    Adam and Eve had three sons after being told to leave the garden of Eden: Cain, Abel and Seth. However, Seth is born latter in the story, yet still plays a significant roll.  This story may be brief, but it is so important to understanding the bigger picture.  Cain and Abel (Gen 4) Cain is the eldest of the three brothers followed by Abel and it is with these two brothers that the story starts.  While Abel is a keeper of sheep, his older brother Cain is growing vegetables.  As they get older, both give offerings to the Lord; Cain offers fruit from the ground and Abel the first fat portions from the first of his flock.  The story doesn't tell us why Cain's offering was refused or why Abel's was accepted, but it does say Cain was very angry at being rejected:  "...but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell." (Gen 4: 5) Before I go any further, for those of

The 2 tress in the garden of Eden

By McDonald, T.   |  Date 24th of January 2021  There are two trees in the story of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis, but what is the difference?  Why does God not want Adam or Eve to eat from either of these trees?   The tree of knowledge of both good and evil This is the tree in the midst of the Garden.  In verse 16 and 17 of chapter 2, God says:   And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die."   God then creates woman from a rib of Adam.  Then the following happens at the beginning of chapter 3, Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Eve responds by saying God told them not to or they will certainly die in verses 2 and 3 of this chapter: The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat f

3 Jewish Festivals Christians Should Know About

Image
By McDonald, T.   |  Date 14th of October 2020 The Jewish calendar is full of festivals with each of them full of meaning. However, there are three festivals that should be of interest to all Christians. The feast of Passover (Pesach) The feast of Weeks (Also called Pentecost or Shavuot) The feast of Booths (Sukkot or Feast of Tabernacles)  These festivals are the three harvest feasts for spring, summer and autumn. Why do Christians need to know about them? These are the three major festivals at the time of Jesus and are called the pilgrimage festivals: shalosh regalim. People from the Jewish faith would head to Jerusalem to celebrate these festivals. Moreover, these festivals also represent major events in the Bible for the Israelites all relating to Exodus. God explains how to celebrate them in Exodus 12 13, Leviticus 23 and Deuteronomy 16. The feast of Passover (Pesach) First, I will explain the festival and the story in brief. This is an eight day (seven days if you are in the H

How Numbers relates to your baptism.

By T. McDonald . | Date 14th of September 2019 Numbers is the fourth book of the Pentateuch, which in Judaism is called the Torah.   The Pentateuch/Torah consists of five books all by Moses under the influence of and inspired by G-d.   Numbers relates to your post baptism life by symbolising:   a journey with G-d and the trust it requires; and grumbling to G-d. Numbers symbolises how a journey with Jesus requires trust.   After leaving Egypt, the Israelites stayed at mount Sinai for a year.   At the end of this year, a census is conducted and instructions of how the tribes where to be arranged around the tabernacle given.   The tabernacle was to be at the centre with the twelve tribes around the Levites and the priests.   This is a key point: G-d is to be at the centre.   This raises some questions, is G-d at the centre of your life; do you trust Jesus?   Do you wish you had never started this journey with Jesus or are you feeling optimistic about the future?   Getting
