How To Make Kebab Van Dinner

Written by McDonald, T.  |  Date 17th of April 2023

Do you ever start to miss a take-a-way?  If you do, you are not alone.  Many vegans have expressed a desire to have more choice and take-a-way is no exception.   For this reason, I have written this blog to show you how you can make a classic take-a-way that will leave you speechless!  I will cover both doner and shish kebabs.

What to use instead of meat

In these examples for the no-chicken shish kebab, I have used tofu in one and Squeaky bean in the other. I cut the tofu into chunks and added it to the skewers; however, the squeaky bean meat substitute did not need much time to heat, so a heated it separately in the same roasting tray.

Doner Style Kebab

Yes, doner style kebab meat is available in the UK!  The product is from Oumph, made from peas and is brilliant!

How to make the salad

There are two parts to the salad.  First there is the mixed cabbage slaw and second is the regular salad with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.

Mixed cabbage slaw has only a few ingredients:

  • red cabbage
  • white cabbage
  • white onion
  • Lemon juice
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Olive oil (optional)

Shred the cabbage and onion and mix together in a bowl with the lemon juice, salt, and pepper and the olive oil should you choose to use it.

The chilli peppers that are a common addition to this take-a-away in the UK can be found in Tesco supermarket.  I personally love these peppers.

Fragata - Guindillas.

You can see they look just like the kebab van ones.

How to make the garlic sauce

I have already written a blog on how to do this so I will just give you a link to it.  How To Make Garlic Sauce

How to make the chilli sauce

I also have a blog on how to make chilli sauce.  This particular version is the no cook one, so it is very easy to make.

A brilliant take on a take a way classic.

The Shish Kebabs

Tofu kebabs with salad and mixed cabbage slaw.

Using the Squeaky bean meat substitute.  This was great too, but I prefer tofu.

The Doner Kebab

The Oumph doner style mock meat didn't disappoint.  It was amazing in every way! It was just like the flat strips of meat you would expect and had a realistic taste.

I hope that you liked this blog and if you do try this recipe, please let me know how you got on and what it turned out like. You can leave a comment in the comments below.
